The MSc in GIS at the University of Leicester has been established since 1988 and is highly-regarded nationally and internationally. It has recently been allocated the largest number of NERC studentships of any GIS course in the UK, which cover the course fees and a maintenance payment.
GIS teaching at the University of Leicester is the primary recipient and lead site of a recent £4.4m award from the Higher Education Funding Council for a Centre of Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) to develop Spatial Literacy IN Teaching (SPLINT). Through SPLINT the Department of Geography has received £650k for GIS-related computer laboratory refurbishment and software purchase. These include state-of-the-art class and field based Virtual Reality and computing facilities.
