Hi Torsten,
As far as I understand the IRTK software, the B-spline control point
spacing is set in mm -- so the overall mm or voxel dimensions of the
image will not change this, and hence the accuracy will not be
affected. A smaller cropped image would contain fewer control points
at a given spacing, which might speed up the registration slightly.
Since the B-splines are locally supported, those control points in
empty parts of the image should not affect the interesting areas of
the image, and similarly the optimisation process shouldn't spend much
time shifting uninteresting control points around, since there will
not be large gradients in the cost function in the empty regions. So
I'm not sure how dramatic the speed-up will be, but I guess there's no
harm in trying.
Best,
Ged.
