With funding from the US Institute for Peace, AMERA (Africa and Middle East
Refugee Assistance), a UK based Charity (see http://www.amera-uk.org) organized
a conference in Nairobi in January this year to promote legal aid for
refugees in the global south. It was attended by 16 such organizations and two
of them represented networks spanning 32 countries in Africa.
At the conference, the participants revised the Charter for membership for a
network of such NGOs and law clinics and a professional code of ethics for
those representing refugees, the 'Nairobi Code' (available at
http://www.amera-uk.org/legalaid.htm).
AMERA is encouraging other legal aid entities that include refugees or are
devoted entirely to providing legal aid to refugees, or who might be interested
in beginning such an organization where one does not exist, to get in contact
with Barbara Harrell-Bond on [log in to unmask] for a report of this meeting
and for further information.
