Maternal age and infantile autism
C Gillberg - Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 1980 - Springer
"There was a strong tendency toward increasing risk of autism in the child
with increasing maternal age."
Parental age in infantile autism, autistic-like conditions, and borderline
childhood . -
SE Mouridsen, B Rich, T Isager - Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders,
1993 -
There was a recent study correlating to Fathers age, however it logically
follows there might be a correlation between a fathers age and the mothers age
does it not ?
Advancing Paternal Age and Autism - all 5 versions >
A Reichenberg, R Gross, M Weiser, M Bresnahan, J . - Archives of General
Psychiatry, 2006
The problem with all autism incidence studies is that the are bedevilled by
social construction and cultural practice (Grinker Unstrange Minds), in that
diagnosis of autism is not at all consistent in that as a spectrum disorder,
what is one clinicians judgement of clinically significant varies from anothers,
notwithstanding the effects of litigation for inclusion in service provision
that dictates which particular DSM version of PDD is diagnosed, never mind the
inconsistency over time of definitions of autism to begin with. Given the list
of studies I have given you, the definition in Gillbergs time is not the same as
in 1993.
A summary of Changes of diagnostic criteria can be found in Jordan, Autistic
Spectrum Disorders a handbook for Practitioners.
Genetic markers only complicate matters, since that again is bedevilled by the
observational bias of what one decides is a trait of autism and thus governed by
gene x (more likely the complex interaction of genes)
It's all like hunting the snark really, and Lewis Carol should know, he was
probably one of us "neurodiverse"
