Hi Erin,
We no longer carry out a screening. Any student, who thinks that they
might be dyslexic, is advised to come and see a disability adviser.
In this appointment we discuss with the student, what dyslexia is, how
if can effect students, and the types of support that can be
implemented. We then provide the student with an information booklet
giving all of this information. In the booklet we have a quick tick
list, which looks at the types of difficulties dyslexic students might
experience.
We have found that 100% of students that come through to see us are put
forward for the assessment. It seemed fruitless because of this to
carry out a formal screening.
We have found this to be very effective, and we maintain a rough 99%
positive diagnosis of dyslexia.
Best Wishes,
Simon Morris

Subject: Dyslexia Screenings
Hello All,
Apologies for cross posting.
We currently undertake a screening, but refer 100% of students onwards
for a diagnostic test. Because of this, we are pondering on the
usefulness of the screening that we do.
- Do you do an initial screening with a student who has not yet
been diagnosed as dyslexic?
- If so, does this screening get passed to the Specialist Tutor or
Ed Psych to feed into the diagnostic test?
- Roughly what percentage of students do you refer for a
diagnostic test?
I would appreciate examples of practice and/or advice!
