Volunteer Development Scotland
Informal volunteering in Scotland: social inclusion in marginal communities across the lifecourse
Applications are invited for an ESRC doctoral studentship entitled Informal volunteering in Scotland: social inclusion in marginal communities across the lifecourse in collaboration with Volunteer Development Scotland on either a full-time (3 year) or part-time (5 year) basis. Volunteer Development Scotland (VDS) is Scotland’s Centre for Excellence in volunteer development. It promotes the value of volunteering and aims to extend volunteering opportunities to those who have not yet experienced volunteering. The studentship provides an exciting opportunity to work with VDS on a project contributing to a theoretical and policy relevant understanding of informal volunteering in a range of marginal communities in Scotland.
The ESRC CASE +3 studentship starts on 1st October 2007. It covers tuition fees and a full-time stipend of approx. £14,000 per annum plus an additional £2000 per annum from Volunteer Development Scotland. Part-time pro rata.
Applicants should have a good first degree (2:1 or better) in a relevant social science discipline and should have completed (or be about to complete) a recognised research training programme, such as an ESRC-approved Masters degree or be able to demonstrate a level of research training sufficient to undertake an independent research project. Applicants must be EU citizens. EU citizens who have been resident in the UK for less than three years are only eligible for the fees element of the award.
The successful applicant will be based in Geography, in the School of Social Sciences at the University of Dundee. She/he will be supervised by Dr Fiona M. Smith and Professor Nick Fyfe at University of Dundee, and by Dr Rhoda Macrae at Volunteer Development Scotland.
