CALL FOR PAPERS/POSTERS
In recent years urban geography has come to be characterised by an
increasingly wide range of different takes on the city. Where previously
it may have been possible to characterise urban geography as dominated by
a handful of competing approaches, to do so in the current period is much
more difficult. Thus scholars can be found working from a wide range of
perspectives including, but not limited to: feminism, post-colonialism,
postmodernism, post-structuralism, psychoanalysis, actor-network theory,
mobility studies, queer theory, non-representational theory, and political-
economy to name but a few.
Though this proliferation has radically expanded understandings of the
urban world, there have been few attempts to explicitly reflect on what
different approaches add to our understandings of cities or the extent to
which they may complement or contradict each other.
The 2007 UGRG conference will explore how contemporary urban researchers
are approaching the city. The event provides an opportunity for scholars
at all stages of the career path to think through in an informal and
supportive atmosphere how they and others approach the city.
Building on the success of previous meetings, the conference will take the
form of keynote and shorter papers interspersed with poster presentations
and discussion. Whilst it is recognised that people may want to illustrate
their approach through a range of substantive foci, it is hoped that
papers and posters will bring the approaches that underpin that work to
the fore – so as to stimulate discussion around different approaches to
the city.
If you would like to contribute either a short PAPER (20 minutes,
including questions) or a POSTER please contact Richard G. Smith (Email:
[log in to unmask]) OR, Margo Huxley (Email:
[log in to unmask]). For those thinking of contributing a paper
please provide a short abstract (of no more than 200 words). Deadline for
contributors: Friday 14th September 2007.
