Rationale: As a notion, diaspora has had much invested in it; on the one
hand it has come to symbolise fluid identities and syncretic cultures, on
the other it has also become synonymous with the description and
classification of diasporic, homeland-centred, ethno-religious ‘groups’.
What has often been missing from such accounts is a detailed, material and
contextualised understanding of how politics is involved in the process of
diasporic formation and existence. In particular, the relationships between
diaspora, politics and space need to be better understood and explored, in
order to engage with debates on the relevance of diaspora to the
contemporary world. To this end, this conference presents theoretical and
empirical papers on diaspora in relation to notions of space and place.
