An international conference on Paphlagonia and Pontus in antiquity and the
early Byzantine period (7th c. BC-7th c. AD) will take place between May
31st and June 4th, 2008 at the Dokuz Eylül University in Izmir, Turkey.
The conference is jointly organised by the Department of Archaeology,
Dokuz Eylül University, Izmir and The Centre for Classics and Archaeology,
School of Historical Studies, University of Melbourne. This conference
will be organised as a part of the Paphlagonia Project, a long-term
archaeological field project in central Paphlagonia <www.paphlagonia.com>.

We invite papers from scholars and graduate students on any aspect of
Paphlagonia and Pontus in the above period. The conference aims to bring
together participants from throughout the world to discuss a range of
issues concerning this North Anatolian landscape and encourage dialogue
amongst and between Classical and Near Eastern archaeologists, ancient
historians, classicists and all other disciplines from Classical, Near
Eastern and Anatolian Studies.

The conference seeks papers on both the adaptation and change and the
continuity of culture(s) over time and space, and on the construction of
ethnic identities in the culturally diverse area of Paphlagonia and
Pontus. Participants are encouraged to explore all kinds of evidence on
the region and its relations with other areas (Galatia, Bithynia,
Propontis, Thrace, Colchis/Georgia, Armenia, the rest of the Black Sea,
etc.), including textual, archaeological, artistic, anthropological,
numismatic and epigraphic, from Archaic to Early Byzantine times.

A post-conference excursion is planned on June 4th to both of the
archaeological museums of Izmir and to the excavations at Agora and Old
Smyrna.

We seek the widest participation at this conference. We would like to
encourage colleagues from all parts of the world to attend. We should be
grateful if you would display copies of the first circular in your
institution.

We look forward to your joining us at the Dokuz Eylül University in Izmir.

The 'Inspiring Learning' workshop will explore how to encourage deeper
learning by designing tasks and modules that require students to carry out
their own research IN GROUPS, as such it will be particularly useful to
those considering introducing group coursework or group presentations
(whether formative or summative) into their modules.

The workshop will be held from 11.30 to 3.30 (including lunch) at the
Centre for Excellence in Enquiry Based Learning (CEEBL
http://www.campus.manchester.ac.uk/ceebl/), University of Manchester,
Sackville Street, on Friday 25th May.

Further details of the programme (which includes a current group work
initiative in Classics) are available from Nicola Mellor
([log in to unmask]). Pre-registration is essential and can be done
by returning the booking form at http://tinyurl.com/33kqy7

The workshop is free of charge and open to anyone with a teaching role in
History, Classics, Archaeology and related disciplines. Since it may be of
particular interest to early career academics and graduate teaching
assistants, the Subject Centre will fund a number of travel bursaries in
order to enable them to attend.

Classics Project Officer

EpiDoc Summer School, 11-15 June, 2007.

Over the last few years an international group of scholars has been
developing a set of conventions for marking up ancient documents in
electronic form; since we started with inscriptions, it is known as
EpiDoc, but the principles are being applied to papyri and coins, and the
aim is to produce conventions consistent for those used to markup texts of
every kind,

TEI: http://www.tei-c.org/

Following on from the interest we have seen in EpiDoc training events
(including recent sessions in Rome and San Diego) and the success of the
London EpiDoc summer school over several years now, we shall be holding
another week-long workshop here at King's College London, from the 11th-
15th June this year.

* The EpiDoc Guidelines provide a schema and associated tools and
recommendations for the use of XML to publish epigraphic and papyrological
texts in interchangeable format. For a fuller description of the project
and links to tools and guidelines see http://epidoc.sf.net.

* The Summer School will offer an in-depth introduction to the use of XML
and related technologies for publication and interchange of epigraphic and
papyrological editions.

* The event will be hosted by the Centre for Computing in the Humanities,
King's College London, which will provide the venue and tuition.

The school is free of charge, but attendees will need to fund their own
travel, accommodation, and subsistence. (There may be cheap accommodation
available through KCL; please inquire.)

* The summer school is targeted at epigraphic and papyrological scholars
(including academic staff, post-docs, and advanced graduate students) with
an interest and willingness to learn some of the hands-on technical
aspects necessary to run a digital project (even if they would not be
marking-up texts by hand very much themselves). We shall assume knowledge
of Greek/Latin, the Leiden Conventions and the distinctions expressed by
them, and the kinds of data and metadata that need to be recorded by
philologists and ancient historians. No particular technical expertise is
required.

* Attendees will require the use of a relatively recent laptop computer
(Win XP+ or Mac OSX 10.3+), with up-to-date Java installation, and should
acquire a copy of the oXygen XML editor (educational discount and one-
month free trial available); they should also have the means to enter
Unicode Greek from the keyboard. Full technical specifications and advice
are available on request. (CCH may be able to arrange the loan of a
prepared laptop for the week; please inquire asap.)

If you are interested in attending the summer school, or have a colleague
or student who might be interested, please contact
[log in to unmask] as soon as possible.
