As part of the Royal Anthropological Institute Film Festival and landmark
international conference Beyond Text: Synaesthetic and Sensory Practices in
Anthropology to be held at the University of Manchester, June 27-July 2nd the
following special events are scheduled alongside the 78 New Films and 100
Conference Speakers.
On* Wednesday, 27 June *the award winning director *Kevin Macdonald*, whose
most recent film Last King of Scotland about the Ugandan dictator, Idi Amin
won an Oscar for Best Leading Actor for Forest Whitaker and the BAFTA
Alexander Korda Award for Best British Film will be in conversation with
anthropologist *Hugh Brody*.
On *Thursday 28 June *there will be the Public Debate: 'Anthropology on
television - Education or Entertainment?' chaired by Anna Ford, while *Saturday
30 June* sees the start of the Beyond Text: Synaesthetic and Sensory
Practices in Anthropology Conference. Conference speakers include: Don
Brenneis, Paul Carter, Peter Crawford, Elizabeth Edwards, Steven Feld, Penny
Harvey, Paul Henley, David Howes, Sharon MacDonald, David MacDougall, George
Marcus, Susan Meiselas, Howard Morphy, Judith Okely, Chris Pinney, Catherine
Russell, Arnd Schneider, Lucien Taylor, James Thompson, Janet Wolff. The
opening of the conference will include film director Gary Tarn discussing
and showing excerpts from his BAFTA nominated film Black Sun.

On *Sunday 1st of July*, the award winning author Caryl Phillips will do a
reading and take part in a lunchtime discussion with anthropologist *Steven
Feld * and the artist *Virginia Ryan*, about their exhibition
*'Castaways'*which is being staged at the Whitworth art gallery as
part of the Beyond
Text: Synaesthetic and Sensory Practices in Anthropology Conference.
*Castaways* is a mixed media exhibition by visual artist *Virginia Ryan* in
collaboration with acoustic anthropologist *Steven Feld*. This exhibition
has transformed a gallery into an environment concerned with the washed-in
and washed-out history and memory of displacements, gold and slavery along
the one-time African Gold Coast, resonating with the current anniversaries
of Ghanaian independence and the abolition of slavery. The exhibition has
also been planned and scheduled so as to address the creative and
intellectual possibilities of 'Beyond Text?'
