GeoData Institute, University of Southampton
The GeoData Institute, part of the School of Geography, provides specialist
consultancy and research services in environmental and spatial information
technologies. GeoData provides IT development, support and training to a
broad market sector including environment, health, development and planning
and socio-economics.
We are seeking a GIS Analyst with previous experience as a GIS professional
to join our 8-strong GIS / database team to work on a variety of our
internal and external GIS projects. The position will involve data
collation, analysis and mapping, and you will be responsible for liasing
with UK data providers and advising on data formats and analysis. The role
will require you to work both within GeoData and from clients’ offices.
Suitable candidates are likely to have a GIS qualification, possibly with an
environmental background, with postgraduate experience or qualifications in
environmental information management, analysis and development. You should
be able to demonstrate knowledge and experience in the application of GIS to
commercial requirements, and have proven experience of ESRI products (ArcGIS
and ArcView 3.x). A strong working knowledge of other GIS systems,
especially MapInfo, and ESRI development environments would be an advantage.
You will have good organisational skills, project management and reporting
experience and the ability to liaise effectively with commercial/consultancy
clients, Agency and Local Authorities. You should have good communication
skills and a pragmatic approach to problem solving, with a strong attention
to detail and be able to work flexibly. You should be able to work
independently but take guidance where required.
This appointment is offered as a temporary position for 11 months in the
first instance, with the potential to extend, to start as soon as possible.
