From a Review of a production of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest" in the
Columbia, Missouri, Daily Tribune of 13 May 2007
"The moments in the play when Dr. Spivey explains the "therapeutic community"
to McMurphy are "hilarious," Scott said, but this is the same doctor who
eventually orders McMurphy’s lobotomy.
"I try to say in my director’s notes that it emphasizes some methods of
psychological treatment that we have since abandoned, but they are really
presented as instruments of societal torture," Scott said. The play’s
allegorical messages, circa 1960s, continue to resonate, perhaps even more so
given today’s rather conformist and exceedingly paranoid society."
