Vacancies EURESOURCE Research programme
Programme description:
The research programme ŒReligious Sources of Solidarity¹ (EURESOURCE) is
funded by the partnership of national research councils in Europe (NORFACE)
and hosted by The Faculty of Religious Studies at Radboud University
Nijmegen in the Netherlands. The programme addresses the question to what
extent religion in Europe re-emerges as a social force from both comparative
and cross-national angles and from real-life perspectives as clarified by
focus group research. Religion is understood as religious capital that is
socially Œinvested¹ or remains Œdormant¹ in certain times and places and
that varies with regard to its private or public display. To investigate
that, we clarify Europeans¹ religious characteristics in the various
European countries during recent decades and sort out if it contributes to
social interests. We envisage solidarity to be one of the main interests
that (re-)emerges on political agendas at the national and European level.
Taking into account the different types of implied compliance, we
distinguish solidarity at the intimate domain of family and friends, the
social enterprise domain of community and civil society, and the regulated
domain of society at large. On the basis of four available international
databases that contain data of many European countries we first clarify if,
where and when religion actually emerges in Europe during the last decades
and what the respective solidarity characteristics are. Subsequently, we
describe the empirical effects of religion on solidarity and interpret
findings as the various ways in which religious capital acts as a Œsocial
force¹ for solidarity in the different domains. We will interpret national
differences on the basis of typologies of state-church relationship, type
and level of welfare-regime, and cultural dimensions, while taking into
account migration-data. Next to that, we engage in qualitative research to
clarify the Œlived experience¹ of religion and solidarity. By means of focus
groups in three countries we gain a balanced insight into everyday life
perspectives of our research issue. These in-depth studies will enrich and
may correct our analyses by providing Œnative¹ answers to our research
questions.
The research programme contains the following research projects:
· Post-doctoral project: Œlongitudinal changes in religiosity and
solidarity¹
The post-doctoral project will answer the longitudinal research questions:
to what extent have religious and solidarity characteristics fluctuated
longitudinally in the various European countries over recent decades?
· First junior project: Œreligious support of solidarity with intimate
others¹.
The first junior project tackles the research questions in the domain of
family and friends by focusing on solidarity based on affective compliance,
where love and friendship serve to establish and maintain intimate bonds.
· Second junior project: Œreligious support of solidarity with
community and civil society¹.
The second junior project will answer the research questions in the domain
of community and civil society, where people contribute to solidarity by
meeting social needs on a voluntary basis.
· Third junior project: Œreligious support of solidarity with the
state¹.
The third junior project will answer the research questions in the
solidarity domain of society at large, where compliance is based on cultural
and legal regulations focusing on economic and political aspects of
solidarity.
The vacancies are posted at Radboud University:
http://www.ru.nl/vacatures/vacatures/nieuw/ and at several other national
and international academic career sites. The procedure will close at open at
May 24th 2007.
Post-doc (1.0 fte)
Faculteit der Theologie
Maximum salary: Euro 4.190,- gross/month
Vacancynumber: 21.02.07
Closing date: 24-05-2007 Job description The post-doctoral project
Œlongitudinal changes in religiosity and solidarity¹ is the senior project
of the international research programme ŒReligious Sources of Solidarity¹
(EURESOURCE) of the Faculty of Religious Studies, Radboud University
Nijmegen. The research programme addresses the question to what extent
religion re-emerges in Europe as a social force that contributes to
solidarity at the levels of family and friends, civil society and the state
at large. In answering this question, the programme takes into account
national differences in culture, welfare regime and state-church
relationship. This empirical research will be based on four available
international databases that contain data of 24 European countries.
The programme consists of four projects in which the post-doc will clarify
if, where and when religion actually emerges in Europe during the last
decades and what the respective solidarity characteristics are from both
comparative and cross-national angles. The post-doc employs advanced
statistical analyses techniques in order to answer the research questions.
The results will be confronted with real-life perspectives as clarified by
focus group research, and will be analyzed on the basis of qualitative
research techniques.
The post-doctoral project will be located in Nijmegen and starts August
2007. Supervisors are the principal investigator, Prof. Dr Peer Scheepers,
the research coordinator, Dr Hans Schilderman, and Prof. Dr. Leslie Francis.
Requirements Candidates have a PhD in theology or in religious studies with
demonstrable knowledge and insight of social sciences as evidenced by
publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals, or have a PhD in one of the
social sciences with demonstrable knowledge and insight of theology or
religious studies as evidenced by publications in relevant peer-reviewed
journals.

skills in empirical research techniques as evidenced by publications in
relevant peer-reviewed journals. More specifically, they should be familiar
with advanced statistical analyses in comparative research, including proven
skills in longitudinal analyses, structural equation modelling, and
multi-level analyses.
Candidates are expected to argue a substantiated motivation for this
particular project. Candidates will be checked for their ability to perform
in a research-team and for English fluency.
In case of similar capacities, the priority is for a female researcher.
Organization The Faculty of Religious Studies is a young and dynamic faculty
where enthusiastic researchers cooperate in a multidisciplinary environment
and are offered unique opportunities to develop challenging lines of
research. The research is accommodated in the Research Institute for
Religious Studies and Theology (RST).
