Geographies of volunteering: influences of contextual factors on the
propensity to volunteer (ESRC CASE studentship in collaboration with
Institute for Volunteering Research)
The project will combine quantitative and qualitative methods. It will
analyse recent waves of the Home Office Citizenship Survey to explore
variations between places in volunteering rates (we have permission to link
small-area census and other socioeconomic statistics to the surveys allowing
a fine-grained analysis). This will be complemented by qualitative
investigations of local variations in the availability of volunteers; the
student will explore whether or not the quantitative findings are
corroborated by local perceptions of the difficulty / ease of recruiting
volunteers, and they will investigate local understandings of the underlying
reasons for this.
The project would suit a social scientist with an ESRC-recognised RT
masters' degree or its equivalent - precise disciplinary background is less
important than experience in (or willingness to acquire skills in) survey
analysis and qualitative research.
This 'CASE' studentship is in collaboration with the Institute for
Volunteering Research, London. It pays the standard ESRC maintenance award,
plus a £2Kpa supplement.
