well. (listened to the end this time)
the way the (episode? edition? thing) begins is irritating, with the
voices. I liked the music, though it went on for so long it made me
wonder if it was going to just be a music exposé.
Bernstein:
dug the first poem he read a lot, & your intro worked well.
(poly-referential sounds questionable, as though a poem could mean
anything at all)
sirens went off for me at the 1999-France-reading poem; a piece where
the speaker just says "I am a (adj.) poet" over & over? got to admire
his balls ("Maybe some other time.."), & it was entertaining: mainly
because, for all the insider-puns/references, he read it fucking well
& made fun of himself. it would't've taken much to make me hate it
though, & Charles is one of very few people who can pull something
like that off at all.
the words 'poet' & 'poem' occur a little too often for [my] taste.
the sound poem was great fun for the first minute or so (not least
because I've just been reading up on phonetics & phonology), then it
annoyed the hell out of me.
Ren Powell's poem was good, & her reading was OK (though she has
trouble saying 'shit' without the footnote 'ooh a bad word' tone).
Luis Valadez was ridiculous. not in a good way.
Bernier was very good, & her reading fit the text.
Mohammad was ridiculous, in a REALLY good way. ('washed-up oshkosh
broth' oh man)
Amber Nelson's poem, as well as reading, was bad.
the robotic sequence was very fun. Radiohead's "fitter happier", Lite.
it also made a little fun of the starkness of Nelson's reading, I
found, or of reading poetry aloud (badly) in general.
Schroeder's piece didn't mean much at all to me personally, but he read it well.
(way to go on pronouncing Pérez' name Bob! heh) her poem was good, at
last some vivid imagery; it borders on prosaic in a nice way (rare). &
a + for the word 'bougainvilla', taught to me by Sam Beam.
Rzepka's piece was poetry?? what? interesting, in the way slicing
one's own tongue is interesting.
haha, Tim Martin was super. best reading of the whole bunch.
seriously. sympathetic as hell.
more confetti?? first blossoms, now rain. please. Compton's reading is
bad. shame, the poem seemed ok (not great, ok).
anyway thanks. don't often get to hear spoken (english) poetry here.
congrats on the, um, issue. :)
