Dear Immaculada,
A quick response to your enquiry, which may or may not be of assistance to
you.
Several years ago, I surveyed, and photographed, a number of abandoned mine
workings in the vicinity of Alcaracejos [which is about 75km north of
Cordoba, and just north of the Sierra Morena]. I was particularly
interested in trying to locate a mine operated by the "Sociedad Anonima
Minas de Alcaracejos", as the share certificates issued by that company in
1898 depicted a Cornish design pumping Engine house in superb detail. I
found not only what I believe to be the site of that mine, but also two
other mine sites with Cornish design Engine Houses [at Nava Redonda and Las
Morras de Cuzna], and published details of all of these in two publications:
"Interpreting the ruins of Cornish Design Engine Houses" [in Spanish
and English]. Brown, K., Morris, J.H., Perez Sanchez, A.A., and
Critchley, M. A book published by "Europamines" in 2005, 48 pages.
"Cornish Engine House Vignettes". Morris, J.H. An article published
in "Scripophily", the Journal of the International Bond and Share
Society, May 2006.
The vignette of the Cornish design engine house shown on the "Minas de
Alcaracejos" share certificate is remarkably similar to that shown, albeit
in less detail, on share certificates issued in 1916 by S.A. "La Argentifera
de Cordoba". This strongly suggest a connection between Cordoba and
Alcaracejos, and maybe the development of the mines in the latter area form
part of the history you are researching.
There are remains of many other mines in this region, some quite large [for
example, Mina de Rosalejo], but I know little of their history and I have
many more sites still to visit.
If any of this information is of help to you, I would be delighted to share
details with you directly [not via the mining-history mailbase] and send you
photographs.
Best wishes,
John Morris

Subject: Mines of Cerro Muriano
Dear members of the list.
I am looking for information about the mines of Cerro Muriano (Cordoba -
Spain), so I decided to subscribe to this list.
I am from Cordoba and my great-grandfather was employed at the above
mentioned mines, probably at the smelting. Unfortunately, I could not know
him.
I am very interested in this matter and if I assemble the sufficient
information perhaps be able to prepare a publication.
I have read all the messages on this topic and have seen the marvellous
ancient photos of the area of files. Does anybody have more photos or
information about these mines?.
I will try to help whom he asks for it with the Spanish papers that I have.
Greetings and forgive my English (almost I have forgotten it)
Inmaculada Ramos
