The University of London Research Library Services (ULRLS), which
comprises Senate House Library and the libraries of the School of
Advanced Study, has spent the past 18 months developing an electronic
catalogue for archives and manuscripts. Our new ADLIB database
complements the descriptions of printed books and periodicals on the
libraries' Innopac catalogue and makes descriptions of more than 2,000
unique collections searchable online in one place for the first time.
The range of material listed on the catalogue is extraordinarily
diverse, covering more than 1,000 years of history and a variety of
social, cultural and political topics. Several collections concern
issues relating to public health and sanitation: material held at Senate
House Library addresses these topics in relation to philanthropy and
attempts to alleviate poverty in 19th century Britain, whereas archives
at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies include information on health
provision in Ceylon and other British colonies. The papers of Sir
William Allchin (ref: Allchin) discuss medical education within the
University of London around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
The ULRLS archives and manuscripts catalogue will be launched officially
on Thursday 31 May 2007, but it is already available online for
researcher consultation at: http://archives.ulrls.lon.ac.uk/. User
feedback is welcomed: please relay comments via the link on the website.
