ATTAI aka BUTCH GORDON
LOWERARCHY

7-29 JUNE 2007

C4RD presents new work by Butch Gordon - aka Attai - artist, designer, and occasional DJ. Gordon's aesthetic has its roots in 1980s graffiti, and has developed through his illustration and design work, within an urban visual language often characterised as 'street'. Whilst much current art with its origins in street culture relies on stencil or slick composition and production, this work emphasises the play of line.

Grounded in drawing, doodling and sketching, the work presented here combines his unique use of calligraphic brush-work with this street aesthetic on canvas, paper and found objects. This lively play of line, colour and collage features mysterious beings and low-lifes of the demi-monde, inspired by Gordon's time spent with stuffed extinct animals.

C4RD's purpose is to make space for drawing. It seeks to maintain the visibility of a characteristically humanist mode of creativity; to explore the boundaries of the medium of drawing; and to facilitate access and discussion for current drawing practice independent of structural forces in commercial and educational settings. C4RD provides a webservice and an independent non-commercial exhibition space in London dedicated to the exhibition of recent drawing. C4RD seeks to present a balanced programme, and welcomes submissions from those with a particular interest in drawing as a core experience from within and outside the arts.

C4RD is at 61-63 Cudworth St, Bethnal Green E1 5QU (a three minute walk from Bethnal Green tube or East from Bethnal Green rail) and is open Wednesday to Friday 12.30 - 5.30pm. We hope to see you at the private view for this exhibition or during the exhibition itself. For further information please view the website www.c4rd.org.uk or telephone 020 78717367.
