One-Day Symposium
Life Stories, History and Intellectual Disability
Wednesday 31 October 2007
Institute for Advanced Study, La Trobe University, Bundoora.
The symposium will consider the unique challenges of doing life story
work with people with intellectual disability and writing history that
captures and represents the thoughts and experiences of people with
little capacity to represent themselves.
Keynote Speakers
Dorothy Atkinson. Professor of Learning Disability at the Open
University, UK. Dorothy has undertaken groundbreaking life story
research with people with intellectual disability, pioneering methods of
working with them to record and relate their previously unheard stories,
memories and experiences.
Alistair Thomson. Professor of Oral History at the University of Sussex.
Alistair has expertise in research and teaching using oral history and
life history documents and combines research experience in both academic
and community contexts in Britain and Australia.
The Symposium is part of an ARC-Linkage Grant between the History
Program & School of Social Work, La Trobe University, and the Victorian
Department of Human Services, to research the history of Kew Cottages.
It also marks Professor Atkinson's visit to La Trobe as a Distinguished
Visiting Scholar from September- November 2007.
We are calling for expressions of interest for papers or poster
presentations from practitioners, scholars and others working in this
field and from people who wish to attend the conference.

Apologies for cross posting
Some of you may have seen Julie at the Lancaster Disability Studies
Conference last year- her approach to presenting her experiences of
disability and perceptions of impairment was highly original and thought
provoking. For what it's worth I thought it a great shame more wasn't
made of her 'performance' at the conference. Do take a look at her web
site and keep an eye out for her work
Best wishes
Jackie

Subject: My leaky body on the Web
Hi Everyone,
I've recently uploaded a video clip from my performance to my website:
www.myleakybody.com <http://www.myleakybody.com/>
Please feel free to pass it on to any people, lists or groups who would
find it relevant. I am currently booking for professional workshops,
classrooms, arts events and conferences into the fall. I'll also be
doing another public show in Toronto in the coming months.
Inquiries are welcomed at: [log in to unmask]
Best Wishes,
Julie
