Ah Ha!!
MatLab was trying to use the .m files. Deleting the .m-files and non
.mexmaci binaries and then deleting and re-adding the path entry that
points to spm5/ (restart MatLab before re-adding) seems to have solved
the problem :) Maybe I didn't need to delete those files, but who cares
it's working.
