Dear Colleague,
This conference aims to address this area of debate by bringing together philosophers and ethicists, public health practitioners, policy makers and social scientists. Much contemporary discussion of public health ethics is influenced by traditional bioethics and not by more recent ethical and philosophical debate about public health. The aim of this conference is to situate debates about ethical practice in public health firmly within such a context and also within public health practice. The aims of the conference are:
to examine how ethics is applied in practice
to identify philosophical and practical lessons for the further development of public health ethics
The conference will have a focus on the UK but will address comparative and international aspects of public health ethics where relevant.
Key speakers at the conference are:
Professor Ross Upshur, Director of Joint Bio-Ethics Centre, University of Toronto.
Dr Stephen Holland, Senior Lecturer, Department of Philosophy, University of York.
Professor Alan Cribb Professor of Bioethics and Education, Centre for Public Policy Research, King’s College London.
In addition there are papers on a wide range of public health ethical issues and workshop sessions on specific ethical issues.
The Conference will be held at the University of Birmingham's Conference Park on 16-18th May 2007.
