'Why did it cool in the 1950s, 60s and 70s?' and 'Didn't scientists used
to think an ice age was coming?' are two common questions that are often
asked, particularly by those who seek to portray climate scientists as
serial wolf-criers. The basic answer is that the slight cooling that did
occur was mostly limited to the northern hemisphere, and was eventually
attributed primarily to the effect of industrial aerosols. I really
recommend a very good book on the history of global warming science,
called 'The Discovery of Global Warming' by Spencer Weart. He explains
among other things how researchers started to worry in the 1960s and 70s
about a drop in temperatures over northern hemisphere industrialised
countries and how some researchers started to speculate about a coming
Ice Age (although it only really entered the public consciousness after
it was featured prominently in Newsweek magazine). Weart also has lots
of excellent information on his website at:

Hi there
I'd love to receive that document too, thank you. I'm certainly not
illiterate in science, and yet I'm finding this whole global warming
issue confusing. I hate to think what the man on the street is thinking.
I REALLY hope the 'man-made global warming' lobby is right.
Because if it isn't, and 30 years from now the world looks back and
laughs at this scaremongering (much like we do at 'the ice age cometh'
alarm of the 70s), then we certainly won't be in a position to complain
if a large proportion of humanity loses faith in science altogether.
