Very sharp twist at the end, Frederick.
I’m reading Eliot Weinberger’s What Happened Here: Bush Chronicles (New
Directions 2005) contains all his essays etc, written (& mostly
published only outside the US) since 2000 (when he saw the election
travesty as a coup). For people like us, probably not much that’s
new(s), but he was prescient about a lot of things, & does have some
inside info I haven’t seen anywhere else. And he as a New Yorker
responds immediately to the fall of the towers, but interestingly makes
the point that the workers there that early were poor janitor types or
the lowest of the white collar types, with a few perhaps higher up than
that.
You've caught, precisely, one of the divergences that has followed ever
since, & how it begins & beings to pay out...(I meant to say 'play out'
there, but this works too). Neatly done.
Thanks, Doug. I like Weinberger; he likes weird talents I like - Rexroth,
Tarn, MacDiarmaid, whom he collectively called "the ecstatic erudites."
Have been meaning to pick up his Bush book but haven't gotten around to it.
It doesn't have to be the WTC --- the "upper bearer" seems to know already
who is responsible, and the emotions are post-9/11. It may be a forthcoming
attack. Or it may be a WTC that has entered our Dreamtime and become
eternal, absorbing subsequent events.
