Dear colleagues,
please bring the following advert to the attention of potential candidates.
Best wishes,
Jens Bredenbeck.
---
Two PhD positions are available in our recently established group at the
Institute of Biophysics of the University of Frankfurt, Germany. The
positions are funded by the Kovalevskaja Award of the Humboldt
Foundation and will start in July 2007 (later start possible).
Background: Structure changes in molecular systems occur over an
incredible range of time scales from femtoseconds (1 fs = 10-15 s) to
milliseconds and longer. How do processes on different time scales
couple and give rise to complex molecular behaviour, for instance in the
folding and function of biomolecules? Our group addresses such questions
using cutting edge spectroscopic tools, mainly multidimensional IR
spectroscopy. This technique employs a sequence of femtosecond infrared
laser pulses to obtain structure information via the coupling between
molecular vibrations through bonds and through space with very high time
resolution.
In our group you will investigate molecular dynamics and interactions
with the goal to understand molecular processes at the intersection of
chemistry, physics and biology. You will be involved in the development
and use of innovative spectroscopy setups and have the opportunity to
acquire unique skills at the cutting edge of infrared laser
spectroscopy. Also be prepared to learn about the theory necessary to
interpret our experiments on a molecular level.
Qualifications: You should have an excellent diploma or master thesis in
Chemistry or Physics and a strong background in one or more of the
following fields: biophysics, physical chemistry, laser physics,
nonlinear optics, vibrational spectroscopy, femtosecond spectroscopy.
Please send your application to Dr. Jens Bredenbeck
([log in to unmask]), including a cover letter, a CV,
a statement of qualifications relevant for the position, as well as
names and complete addresses of two referees who would write a
recommendation letter on your behalf.
