MIAS SUMMER SCHOOL 2007
Medical Image and Signal Analysis
University of Manchester, 10-15 June 2007
_________________________________________

MIAS-IRC is the Interdisciplinary Research Consortium in Medical Image
and Signal Analysis established by the UK's Engineering and Physical
Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) in 2001. The Consortium members are:
Oxford University, University College London, The University of
Manchester, and Imperial College London. Further details about current
research programmes in MIAS can be found at www.mias-irc.org.

The Summer School is the third to be organised by MIAS as part of its
continuing commitment to attracting and training young researchers to
carry out research in the generation and analysis of medical images and
signals. Specifically, the week-long school programme covers a wide
range of topics:

      * The formation and analysis of important classes of medical
images, including CT, MRI, Ultrasound, functional MRI, and PET
      * Core methods for signal processing, feature detection and
quantitative characterisation of algorithms
      * Specific topics in image analysis including image registration
and statistical shape analysis
      * Forward looking lectures on important topics such as molecular
imaging and future applications of computer vision in medical imaging

The lectures will mostly be presented by a range of internationally
leading researchers. The faculty will be on hand for most of the week to
discuss issues arising from the lectures or from a student's ongoing
research.

Programme Format:

The five-day residential school will consist of an intensive course of
single track sessions. There will also be a set of small group reading
seminars led by a Faculty Member, in which students discuss a paper that
they will be expected to have read prior to arriving at the Summer
School. Time will be set aside for students to visit the exhibition of
the UK Radiological Congress which is taking place in Manchester at the
same time.

Time will be set aside for questions and discussion. The lecture and
tutorial material will be made available during the meeting and
afterwards on the school website.

Students will be expected to have prepared, in advance of their arrival
at the Summer School, a poster that sets out the topic of their work,
with possibly some outline of the methods being followed and/or progress
to date. Since most students will be new to the field, it is not
expected that the posters will report major progress; rather, they are
to be viewed as a catalyst for discussions with other students and with
faculty. A set of posters will be on display each day, to encourage
discussions during coffee/tea breaks and lunch.
Location and timing

The Summer School will begin with registration and a buffet supper on
Sunday 10th June, and will conclude after lunch on Friday 15th June.
Students will be expected to participate in the whole of the Summer
School. The lectures will take place in Ashburne Hall in the University
of Manchester. Accomodation will be provided at Chancellors Hotel.
Organisers

The academic programme for the Summer School is led by Professors Tim
Cootes and Chris Taylor at the University of Manchester.
