Once again, thank you all for your much appreciated responses.
Because of the timing of the feighing activity at Hanging Hey and the need for it to be carried out
also in the existing pit to which Hanging Hey linked, I think that it probably refers to the clearing
of new and existing soughs. However, I am conscious of the point made by several contributors
about the variability of terms between districts; I am pretty sure that feighing also appears in
some accounts of a pit near Huddersfield, but in a slightly different context, so I will be wary of
applying the meaning globally.
