New MA Documentary Practice at the University of Ulster

The course is intended for those who need enhanced creative and production
competence in relation to documentary practice. There will be a particular
emphasis on creative practice in digital technologies, making the course
attractive to both national and international students who wish to attain
professional standards. The course is intended to provide training in
research, production, post production, exhibition and distribution skills,
as well as integrating a theoretical understanding of documentary history
and production. The curriculum will be delivered in partnership with screen
industries, through a unique combination of professional workshops and
masterclasses

The MA Documentary Practice course will be based in the School of Media,
Film and Journalism on the Coleraine campus on the Northern Irish coastline,
where it will access significant digital facilities made available by the
School and the Centre for Media Research, as well as resources associated
with the Faculty of Arts. The Media Studies group at UUC represents one of
the longest established and most highly regarded centres for Media Studies
teaching and research in the UK and Ireland. The MA in Film and Television
Management and Policy, the professionally accredited postgraduate Diploma in
Newspaper Journalism and the MA in International Media Studies are already
based at Coleraine, creating a stimulating intellectual environment.

The teaching staff are practitioners and academics with expertise in the
broad field of documentary production and theory. Cahal McLaughlin is a
filmmaker, writer and academic with credits that include Inside Stories:
Memories from the Maze and Long Kesh Prison (2005) and We Never Give Up:
Reparations in South Africa (2003). Ann Crilly is best known for her
directing of the groundbreaking Mother Ireland (1988) and more recently
Lifting a Dark Cloud: the Story of Kathleen Thompson (2004), as well as the
drama Limbo (2001). Other staff who may contribute include Professor Martin
McLoone, Dr Sarah Edge, Dr Helen Jackson, Dr Gail Baylis and Dr Vladan
Zdrakovic. They will be complemented by other academics in the School and
visiting professionals who work in documentary production, including
directors, cinematographers, editors, producers and commissioning editors.
This MA will benefit from the rostra of guest lecturers to the MA in Film
and Television Production and Management course which is already supported
by the Northern Ireland Film and Television Commission and includes Fergus
Keeling, BBCNI Commissioning Editor, and Dermot Lavery, Doubleband Films.

The course is made up of five modules that run during the academic year from
September to September -

*        Producing, Management and Entrepreneurship
*        Documentary Practice A
*        Documentary Practice B
* Promotion, Distribution and New Technology
*        Practice Dissertation

We welcome applications from those with experience working in the media
industries and from graduates of undergraduate degrees that offer practice.
Applicants must already have experience in audio visual production and show
evidence by a portfolio of their work. We welcome international applications
who satisfy the University's English language requirements. Deadline June
29th 2007.

Students resident in Ireland will be eligible to apply for scholarships to
the Irish Language Broadcast Fund and the Northern Ireland Film and
Television Commission. International students may be eligible for British
Council awards.
