UNIVERSITY OF SUSSEX/UNIVERSITY OF BRIGHTON
A SYMPOSIUM ON PRACTICE-BASED PhDs IN THE MOVING IMAGE
SUPPORTED BY AVPHD
WED 4 JULY
SUSSEX UNIVERSITY, FALMER, BRIGHTON.
The aim of this one day event is to explore approaches to beginning and
developing doctoral work which uses the moving image as a major element of
a research project at PhD level. We also hope the day will help to foster
a network of practice-based researchers both in the region and nationally,
which crosses disciplinary boundaries and encourages an exchange between
people working in different contexts including media studies, music,
anthropology, history and informatics.
The programme will include a sessions on starting research in the field by
Joram Ten Brink (University of Westminster), and on the location of
practice-based research within cultural studies and contemporary art
practice.
We welcome proposals from current PhD students who are producing time-based
work as part of their thesis and would like to give short presentations of
their research (up to 20 minutes). You may be at any stage of your
doctorate, or potentially in the process of formulating your research
direction. You may be working in any discipline and using the moving image
in any genres or platform. Presentations will be followed by a discussion
with delegates and a panel of researchers.
please send your proposal in the form of a 500 word abstract to Lizzie
Thynne: [log in to unmask] by 30 April.
