We have been considering providing similar facilities to staff and
visitors using their own equipment through wireless access.
We have established a separate network to route Internet access through
a proxy server that allows access to a limited range of sites and
protocols. With the appropriate level of security this provides
excellent access for Museum staff. Extending the service to visitors,
however, is a different issue involving as many organisational as
technical issues.
For example we have been advised that if we apply any form of monitoring
- and this appears to include the filtering applied by proxy server -
them we need to advise all potential users AND get their signed
acceptance that they will be monitored before they can be allowed to use
the system.
We still want to provide this service to our visitors as well as staff
so we'll be picking up Nick's suggestion of talking this over with
someone from one of the local libraries before we open up the system to
public access.
Regards,
John

Subject: Filters for Public Access Computers
A museum I advice is looking at the possibility of giving the public
access to heritage related websites via a computer located in one of the
galleries. They would of course like to stop the possibility of this
being used to access inappropriate sites by using a filter.
Does anyone know of or have experience in using these and could give any
recommendations?
Replies can be posted off list to myself if you wish
Many thanks
