GOING BEYOND GOOGLE (tm)
23 May 2007, Birmingham
Google(tm) is an excellent search engine but even it cannot include the whole set of Internet information resources in its cache. This isn't because of slack searching by Google(tm) but rather because, amongst other reasons, there are significant technological problems in bringing copies of certain materials back to the cache. However, for library and information professionals this "invisible" material is often of high quality.
BENEFITS OF ATTENDING
We need to go beyond Google(tm) both for the "invisible web" and other search engines, which offer different functionality appropriate for specific types of information requirement. This course will show you some of the pathways. It will not dislodge Google(tm) as your search engine of choice but will highlight alternative approaches to Google(tm) for specific enquiries.
BY THE END OF THE EVENT PARTICIPANTS WILL HAVE:
· gained an understanding of Google's limitations
· knowledge of other useful search engines
· an understanding of the Invisible Web - what search engines can't find easily
· an appreciation for other information discovery tools as Internet resources
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Anyone from any sector who mainly, or exclusively, uses Google(tm) and thinks that they might be missing something elsewhere. Also those who have attended Getting the most out of Google(tm).
COURSE LEADER: TERRY KENDRICK
Terry Kendrick, originally a librarian, is a marketing A daily user of the Internet, Terry originally trained as a librarian and worked in reference libraries.
