Children with special educational needs (SEN) face many problems, but their needs also pose challenges for libraries. All too often such children experience social exclusion, are denied equal opportunities, and with their right to appropriate library provision is insufficiently met. Not all library staff know that the Disability Discrimination Act covers learning difficulties and other special educational needs.
BENEFITS OF ATTENDING
This course provides an opportunity to explore special educational needs and to identify effective methods for supporting children with learning and reading difficulties in school and public libraries. The course will focus on the needs of seven to sixteen year-olds.
BY THE END OF THE EVENT PARTICIPANTS WILL HAVE:
· learned about the needs of children with learning difficulties
· identified practical ways to increase the value of the library and its resources to them
· discussed new ideas for supporting SEN children's reading and learning
· formulated extra strategies for selecting and exploiting books and other resources
· developed more confidence with SEN children, their parents, carers and teachers
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Children's library service managers, children's librarians, other public library staff, school librarians, SENCOs and other teachers, school library service staff.
