Dear Colleagues,
Please find attached the Provisional program for this event, hot off the
internet from Microsoft!
We are still 3 places short of a Full House, so we would welcome any last
minute additions. If we're going to have any input, or form any sort of
regional approach, then we need to be aware of what is on offer. The
Sharepoint Web Parts are a good example of how providers like Microsoft,
Lotus Notes and Google are vying for our custom to provide an interface that
will stitch together the various constituent part of Web 2.0.
Hopefully MS will also be able to demonstrate 'Grava' which provides a
credible alternative to LAMS. Both LAMS and GRAVA provide a simplified way
for academic colleagues to create (more or less) transferable learning
objects. They are simpler but less sophisticated than the SCORM/IMS
equivalents. We will probably need to provide technical underpinning for
these in the future.
Collaboration is also on the agenda. How will we achieve this. Google are
offering a virtual suite in association with Gmail, Microsoft's offering is
based on Sharepoint/Groove. I am still uncertain about what we will have to
provide by way of open access in the future: Web 2.0 presents challenges to
Microsoft's dominance of the Office Market, particularly as service
suppliers, like Google, are offering a functional, if somewhat limited, set
of collaboration tools for nothing. We need to think of our students and
what they will expect to be able to use. We have already seen this in
student's use of Web 2.0 offerings to customize their learning environments.
What is MS' strategy in relation to Web 2.0?
If you haven't already signed up for the day, there are still three chances
left to find out!
Kindest Regards,
Thomas
