Actually - shock, horror - the IoW ferries are no longer brown! Yes
they were when I first went there in the early 60s and there are
photographs of these antiques on the saloon walls of the modern roll-on-
roll-off ferries they use today.
Based on recent experience I would suggest you do need to book, not
least because it will be the weekend and it will be getting into the
season.
Which one you get depends on where in the UK you're starting from and
where on the Island you need to end up. All three are quite pricy - the
most economical way is to leave the car on the mainland and get the Red
Jet hovercraft from Southampton to Cowes but I guess in your case that
defeats the whole object of the exercise.
