If you are a canon man you will buy canon, and if Nikon, Nikon.
Word from someone who got it wrong.
Just buy the body, as the lenses sold on the consumer end of the market
are deeply disappointing, and are discarded very quickly.
I have the Canon 350D with a Tamron 18-200 zoom.
No complaints here.
BTW, take your old lenses to the shop to check that they have any
functionality. This is where Jessop's is falling apart. People go to the
shop to look, and then buy over the Web.

If you have access to Doctors Net they have an active photography forum
(starring amongst others Adrian midgley) where this subject is
frequently discussed. The answer seems to be that all the Canon and
Nikon cameras will produce excellent pictures and to try handling them
to see which you prefer.

is a website with detailed reviews of all the digital SLRs that is worth
a read.
