I like my Canon EOS 400D
The 18-55mm lens is not bad, but the 50mm F/1.8 is very good for people,
being equivalent to an 80mm lens on a full frame 35 mm (film) camera
which is a good portrait length.
I have a cheap Canon 55-200mm as well, which has its moments.
The 350/400 is said to be less good for people with big hands, unless
they get the battery handle.
The ordinary batter goes on for so long ...

Raw should be lower case, as it is not an acronym such as JPEG.
It is not a specific format.
Canon's CR2 raw format is pretty much a sort of TIFF

I've not yet got the Canon software provided - DPP digital photo
professional - running under emulation in Wine. It is good on a couple
of other operating systems.
The gimp is OK for most of what I'd like to do.
there are several other raw manipulation programs.
