Viruses exploit weaknesses in Windows code. If you haven't got Windows
code on your computer they can't exploit it.
Viruses for Linux will probably arrive in future, but as they don't
exist yet (for practical purposes) there is no point in having
protection. Even Windows antivirus software vendors don't provide
protection against viruses that have not yet been written. :-)
Like matrimony, Linux is not to be enterprised unadvisedly lightly or
wantonly. But you could boot from an Ubuntu CD to see what it looks
like and how it works.
