Now and over the next few months would be an excellent time to submit
manuscripts to the Journal of Geology. Our backlog is now minimal and
manuscripts submitted over the next few months can expect relatively
rapid publication. Our minimum time from submission to publication in
our electronic edition is about 9 months. The Journal of Geology is a
venerable (first issue published in 1893) and independent journal (owned
by the Department and endowed by Penrose). We seek manuscripts that have
broad and general conceptual significance. Our usual size limit
corresponds to 22 Journal pages and our electronic edition facilitates
publication of supplementary files including colored maps and movies.
Page charges are optional and play no role in the acceptance of
manuscripts for publication. Color illustrations cost only $150 per
page. We work with authors, many of whom are foreign, to improve their
English usage, and communications are personal and individual, not
automated. Other information for authors is printed on the inside back
cover of each issue and is available at the Journal’s website:
www.journals.uchicago.edu/JG/journal. I will be happy to discuss
publication matters with you.
The Journal is proud to have published such famous articles as
Chamberlin’s “multiple working hypotheses” and Bretz’ long
controversial, but now accepted, ideas on the catastrophic floods that
produced the channeled scablands of eastern Washington.
Please do pass the word.
Sincerely,
Fred Anderson, Editor
