Hi,
here some answers on speed and usability of a virtual machine:
- First of all for those who do not bother about 64 or 32 bit: Give the
virtual box from Innotek a try. You will find it on:
www.virtualbox.org
It is Open Source Software under the terms of the GNU Public License (GPL).
Most important: it's quite easy to install and to use.
- Speed depends on the virtualization software, cpu and memory - the typical
programs decrease system performance approx. 20 percent.
The amount of memory you can offer to your virtual machine is a critical point
(the more the better). If you want to run software on your host computer
parallel to the virtual machine, you should at least have 1GB of RAM - 2GB is
reasonable.
- Especially as the display adapter is emulated it is a bad idea to use it for
graphics. It's better to use an xserver on Windows(TM ;) ) and to connect to
the virtual machine via telnet (you don't need to use ssh).
- An easy way to share files is to use samba. If you do not like setting up
samba, use winscp (winscp.net/eng/index.php) on the windows machine.
Have a lot of fun,
Jens
