My name is Sue Hoffman. I've been working with refugees and asylum seekers
here in Australia since 2001 and have just started my second year of PhD
research through Murdoch University in Perth, Western Australia.
For a long time and a variety of reasons I wanted to research aspects of the
journeys undertaken by asylum seekers - mainly Afghan and Iraqi - who used
people smugglers to get to Australia by boat. I'm focusing on Iraqis, who
typically left Iraq for Iran or Jordan or Syria; then Malaysia; then
Indonesia; then by sea to Australia. But many didn't make it; some were
turned back by Australian navy, some were in boats that broke up. Over 300
drowned. I've interviewed Iraqis now settled in Perth Australia, and also
Iraqis who have been in limbo in Indonesia since 2001 as a result of
Australian government policy aimed at stopping them reach Australia.
I'm from England, brought up in Leeds, went to University of East Anglia and
lived in London for many years. Get a bit nostalgic sometimes.
Best wishes
Sue Hoffman
