Dear Caribbean list members
The Caribbean Studies list was set up by the Society for Caribbean Studies
to encourage communication among those with research interests in the
Caribbean. Those managing the list have no wish to impose censorship.
With respect to weekly circular messages, it was felt that the list might
lose some of its effectiveness in communicating academic announcements and
discussion if it became attached to a variety of unsolicited news emails or
generic feeds. Over the last few years, electronic access to news media has
made many newspapers highly accessible on an independent basis.
On behalf on the SCS Committee and those involved in maintaining the list,
can I therefore welcome full and open contributions from all sources to the
Caribbean Studies list and suggest that any discussions on this matter be
raised as an item at the Society's AGM at the July conference, and of course
via the e-list itself.
The request to avoid sending weekly circular news was made on the basis that
not all members would necessarily welcome specific news feeds on a regular
basis. David Jessop's pieces were solicited by the Society as pan-Caribbean
commentaries that would likely appeal across the broad range of members'
interests.
Please accept my sincere apologies to all those who have felt that the list
has been censored rather than moderated,
Yours,
David Howard
