Dear colleagues,
As the designated diocesan record office for two dioceses we are
responsible for carrying out parish surveys (every five years following the
initial survey according to the Parochial Registers and Records Measure
1978, amended 1993). This is a significant commitment in terms of staff
time and in reality we try to target parishes which are reluctant to
deposit or have retained significant quantities of older records. The
Measure allows for a fee to be charged for each survey by the inspecting
authority and we have an agreement with one of our two dioceses for a fixed
sum which is paid by the diocese rather than the parish. I wonder if other
diocesan record offices charge a fee and whether colleagues would share
with me off list the agreement they have with their dioceses (indeed I
would be interested to know how many offices are able to fulfill the
requirements of the Measure) . I can summarise replies for those
interested.
