University of Oxford
WORKSHOP ANNOUNCEMENT
Embodiment, Ritual, and the Sacred Landscape
in
Tibetan Healing
17- 18 May 2007
Osler McGovern Centre, 13 Norham Gardens
2-6 pm and 9am–1pm
organised by
Anthropology Research Group Oxford on
Eastern Medicines and Religions
(ArgO-EMR)
The aim:
To date, medical anthropological literature on Tibet has chiefly
focused investigation on the practice and experience of Tibetan
medicine in formal medical institutions concentrated in urban areas
amidst city dwellers. Further research is required to understand how
ordinary people in rural areas experience and perceive illness, and
how they engage in healing. Religious practice generally has been
treated as divorced from medical practice but when studying patients’
health seeking patterns in Tibet, it becomes obvious how
complementary religious and medical practices are. The workshop aims
to serve as a channel of exchange between Tibetan religious-textual
oriented disciplines and the more practical concerns of medical
anthropology of Tibet, emphasize the overlap between medical practice
and ritual healing, and produce new interdisciplinary research
questions.
