STATISTICIAN POST 1:
Statistician, Medical Research Council funded Cardiovascular Genetics Program
University of Leicester
School of Medicine
Department of Health Sciences and Department of Genetics Genetic Epidemiology Group
Salary Grade 6 - £22,332 to £25,889 per annum
Available for up to 3 years
Ref: E3237
Applications are invited for the post of Statistician within the Genetic Epidemiology Group at the University of Leicester. The position is funded as part of a Medical Research Council funded program of research in cardiovascular genetic epidemiology (led by Dr Martin Tobin) which aims to:
* Identify genetic variants that predispose to elevated blood pressure and related cardiovascular phenotypes, informing preventive and treatment strategies that will reduce the risk of stroke, myocardial infarction and other complications of high BP.
* Develop new statistical approaches to maximise the power of genetic association studies, by appropriately modelling available phenotypic information (such as circadian variation in blood pressure) and by utilising information on common types of genomic variation, including "copy number variation".
The successful applicant will be involved in the analysis of data from genetic epidemiology studies and there will be scope for the development of new statistical methodology. The preferred start date for this post is no later than September 2007, however this is negotiable.
Applicants must have proven statistical skills, a degree level qualification in a relevant discipline and will normally have an MSc in a relevant discipline (or the equivalent in professional qualifications and experience). Applicants must also have good written and verbal communication skills and excellent computing skills. Experience of statistical genetic or genetic epidemiology is not necessary (as some training can be provided), but a willingness to learn new approaches will be required.
The University of Leicester has internationally acknowledged strengths in genetics, genetic epidemiology and complex disease research, particularly in cardiovascular medicine. The post will provide an excellent opportunity for career development in a dynamic multidisciplinary team, with strong national and international collaborations.

* to identify genetic variants that predispose to coronary artery disease, and the mechanisms through which they may exert their effects
* to use this information to identify biological pathways that influence risk of coronary artery disease
* to use this information to identify new candidates and systems for drug development
* to develop a world-leading European consortium to provide further knowledge into the genetic basis of coronary artery disease for the benefit of members of the European Community
