Please could you let me know of any examples of interventions that have
been widely used but then subsequently shown to be harmful in a
randomised trial.
An example of the type of study that I am looking for is: In 2004 a
randomised controlled trial evaluating a ‘standard’ therapy for head
injured patients (high dose steroids) was terminated after recruiting
half of the 20,000 participants across the world. It was found that the
two week mortality rate was significantly elevated among the
steroid-treated patients. It has been estimated that failure to evaluate
this treatment promptly caused the deaths of more than 10,000 people.
Many thanks
Catherine
