This workshop is suitable for those who are new to pedagogic research. No prior knowledge of social science or educational research methods is assumed. To ensure the workshop is interactive, PLACES ARE LIMITED to 16 participants so please book early.

1.2 ASSESSMENT AND FEEDBACK IN MODERN LANGUAGES, Staff Development Workshop
8 May 2007, CILT, The National Centre for Languages, London
These events are funded under the 'Workshops to Go' scheme
In this workshop, Professor Paul Cooke (Professor of German Cultural Studies and Pro Dean L&T, Faculty of Arts, University of Leeds) will present the results of a major research project which was carried out at the University of Leeds in 2006: 'Fair, prompt and detailed' - matching staff and student expectations on assessment and feedback in light of the National Student Survey. Participants will increase their knowledge of the issues that surround Assessment and Feedback and will be presented with case studies of good practice in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures at Leeds which the project highlighted. Participants will take away materials that can be used to enhance their own practices in Language disciplines and will also have the opportunity to develop their own ideas for case studies during the session. The workshop will establish a network of professionals working in this key area. Prof. Brenda Smith from the Higher Education Academy will be guest speake!

1.3 FOUNDATIONS IN LANGUAGE TESTING AND ASSESSMENT
Friday 25 May 2007, University of Leicester
This is a one-day workshop organised by the School of Education, University of Leicester and the Subject Centre which introduces the main concepts in language testing and assessment.
The workshop will focus on a range of assessment issues including validity, reliability, the role of self and peer assessment, the assessment of speaking and practical ways of using external standards and frameworks.

1.4 LESS WIDELY TAUGHT LANGUAGES IN THE UK
20 June 2007, University of Wales, Bangor
The conference is organised by the Centre for Galician Studies in Wales, University of Wales Bangor, the Subject Centre for Languages Linguistics and Area Studies (LLAS), and the Centre for Information on Languages Teaching and Research (CILT Cymru).
The conference takes place at a time when the traditional approach to learning major European tongues is in crisis. However, we are increasingly aware of the diversity of languages and cultures thriving in the UK. A growing interest in less widely taught languages provides an opportunity to help redefine the linguistic ethos of UK universities and schools.
The programme is designed primarily to interest colleagues in departments:
- specialising in less widely taught languages
- already offering or thinking of adding one or more of these languages as parts of degrees
- of Welsh
- of Linguistics
- of Area Studies

4.1 NEW DATE: THE FIRST MEETING OF THE SUSTAINABILITY NETWORK FOR THE HUMANITIES
There have been numerous expressions of interest in the Sustainability Network for the Humanities, but many have been unable to make the date of the proposed first meeting. In order to get the broadest range of input from disciplines across the humanities, we have decided to postpone the date of the first meeting until 6th June 2007 (venue in London to be confirmed). 4.2 WORKSHOP : Finding, sharing and re-using online resources - personalising the experience for the teacher and the learner
25th April 2007 (10.15 - 16.30), University of Portsmouth (Park Building)
The L20 research community is a group of language teachers and learning technologists in the SE region whose founding members are the Universities of Portsmouth, Reading, Surrey and Southampton. The community is currently expanding to include other HEIs/FEIs, Sixth Form and Adult Education institutions.
Our community works on exploring and developing innovative tools for the sharing and re-using of online language learning resources, and aims to foster good practice in this area.
Workshops include:
- Share and Share alike? Online learning materials in a repository: would you give as well as take? (hands-on workshop and focus groups)
- Finding a needle in a haystack: how the learning and teaching context helps you find the online learning materials you need (hands-on workshop)
You will also look to the future! Help us with your expertise by:
- Exploring the search terms needed to locate online materials for your own students
- Playing a key part in the creation of innovative searching software using Web 2.0 technologies
- Influencing the development of future educational search tools
Details of the programme will be provided on registration. The day will consist of several hands-on workshops, case study presentations and plenary/group discussions. All reasonable travel expenses will be covered.

4.4 NETWORKING DAY FOR HUMANITIES CAREERS ADVISERS
20 July 2007, Goodenough College, London
The English Subject Centre, in collaboration with other humanities Subject Centres and their AGCAS 'buddies', is convening a second meeting for HE Career Advisers with an interest in the humanities. The meeting will provide a forum for careers advisers to discuss and share ideas and experiences, focussing on issues of working with academic staff. A panel of academics will give their views on working with careers advisers, and several Careers Services will be showcasing their English Subject Centre funded projects to enhance services to English Students.
