Our charging system is implemented once a student has exceeded a set
number of letters, we foresee an international student requiring the
following letters during an academic year:-

Confirmation of enrolment (In addition to one supplied at enrolment)

TWIMC - Work purposes
TWIMC - Bank letter
TWIMC - Visa renewal
TWIMC - Invitation to graduation

Only once a student has had all of the above or for instance 5 letters
do we apply the charge.

In addition to these we will produce the student a council tax exemption
certificate free of charge.

We have standard confirmation of attendance letter which contains a lot
of information, and which suits nearly all requirements.  We very rarely
make changes to this letter.

Any request specifically related to student visas is passed on to the
member of staff in our International Office who is qualified to deal
with such things - nobody else is permitted to do letters for visa
purposes.

For degree ceremonies, we do letters for visa purposes for families.


We are also getting more requests for 'odd' letters, but after some
quick questioning, we find that nearly always a standard letter will
suffice even if the student sometimes thinks not.

We don't charge for writing letter sfor student, as we see it as part of
the job of the University to provide this kind of service.  We would see
it as quite odd to introduce a charge to discourage our students from
using our services.  Surely that's what we are there for?

We are getting increasing amounts of letter request predominantly from
International Students even after a charging system has been introduced.
We have seen a rise in the number of letters that cannot be classed as
standard letters (automated), frequently students are asking us to add
additional text, which is time consuming and open to errors. Examples
include invitation letters for graduation where a student will ask us to
include the Full Name, DOB, Address and on occasion the Passport Number
of the guests they are inviting to the graduation ceremony.

The same is asked of us when an international student wishes to invite a
partner or spouse as a dependent. We are addressing letters directly to
home office departments/embassies etc, and if a student is going on
holiday we are frequently asked to include information relating to where
they are travelling to and approximate dates of travel.

As a result we have to be extremely careful with the wording of the
letters, generally we have the statement "The student has expressed a
wish to........"

Are any other universities producing these letters? Do we actually need
all this additional information or is a standard confirmation of
enrolment letter sufficient, putting the emphasis on the student to
provide the additional information they require.
