[...] I work on the BBC 1 television series called 'Who Do You Think
You Are?'. The premise of the series (in case you haven't seen it) is
to take a well-known British personality on a journey of discovery
within their family history. The personality discovers things they
didn't know about their ancestors, or makes more sense of what they
knew already. Alongside discovering more about 2 or 3 family characters
in the past, they increase their - and the viewer's - understanding of
the wider historical, social and cultural context of that character's
life and times. So, for example, through an individual's experience we
may examine a particular aspect of the Second World War, or the
industrial revolution, or emigration.
The celebrity that I'm currently researching has roots back to the
German monarchy in the late 18th / early 19th century. One of his
ancestors was the illegitimate daughter of Prince Paul von Wurttemberg
and his mistress, the actress Freidrike Porth. The reason that I'm
contacting you is that I'm looking for a historian who might be able to
tell me about illegitimacy and German royalty in this period. The line
connects with the Hanoverian dynasty, and I'd love to find someone who
could also explain the royal line back to this point and maybe tell us
a little about the characters that appear (there's not many). Also we
are very interested to find out more about what the illegitimate
daughter's life would have been like. For example, how would her father
have treated her? What benefits or disadvantages were there to being
the illegitimate child of a Prince?
Any help on this matter would be much appreciated!
Best wishes and thank you,
Rachel
