Dear colleagues
In Autumn 2007 the first issue of the Edinburgh German Yearbook, an
international journal published by Camden House, appears under the
title 'Cultural Exchange in German Literature' (editors: Eleoma Joshua
and Robert Vilain).
In 2008 we shall be editing the second issue, with the key theme
'Masculinities and German Culture'
We are looking to examine the meanings and significance of masculinity
and/or the masculine, as problem or ideal (or indeed both), in German
culture; the history, influence, and reception of the idea. Possible
topics might include, but are not restricted to:
Masculinity and medieval Minne; Luther and Reformation masculinity;
Amazons and warrior women; Men and the Thirty Years War; German men
and World War 1/ World War 2; 18th-century philanthropic pedagogy and
gender; sexology and the masculine; The discursive effeminization of
'the Jew'; The Nazi masculinization of society; Fatherland or mother
country?; Männerphantasien; 1968 and beyond: the 'new man'; Die Männer
der RAF: men and the revolution/ masculinity and terrorism; Men and
mothering; The masculine and the media.
Publication will be Sept/Oct 2008, so the deadline for finished
contributions would be 30 January 2008. Essays may be in English or
German. Abtracts for proposed contributions should be submitted by
email to both the editors as soon as possible:
