Sense About Science originated from discussions held in 2001 by Lord
Taverne, Dame Bridget Ogilvie, Mark Matfield, Sir John Maddox and others,
many of whom are our current trustees, in response to mounting concern about
the profile of science in public debate. It employed staff and began work in
2002. It turned out to be one of several responses to the subjects addressed
in the House of Lords report 2000 on science and society.

There is a wide variety of political histories among our staff, trustees and
advisory council. No doubt wider still (but we don't enquire) among the
2,600 scientists registered with us who write our materials and respond to
debates and inquires from non-scientists. If you are interested in the work
Sense About Science has done on weather and climate in particular, please
visit www.senseaboutscience.org/weather where you will find our document
'Making Sense of the Weather and Climate' (a guide to predictions written by
leading climatologists and meteorologists), slides from the symposium that
launched the document, and links to IPCC and the Met Office's response to
common climate myths.

Sophia - your email to the list with a simple link to a page no reason or
explanation is not an engaging way to argue.

I too have also heard these smears about the Science Media Centre over the
past few years and if they were not so potentially harmful, I would laugh at
them.

What other organisation has done more to secure more science coverage in the
UK news and more scientists' views in the UK news? It's not as if we see
the SMC in the news, hogging the headlines and demanding the limelight. The
SMC works with scientists to get the scientists in the news and is happy to
stay in the background and instead let the science stand for itself.

These nebulous, vague attacks on the SMC and Fiona Fox suggest an ignorance
of what the SMC does, the many scientists and key figures it works with, and
its many accomplishments. That the SMC is being copied in other countries
is testament to the useful job it has done and the success it has had.

I support Bob Ward in asking for proof that the SMC is anti-science or that
it is purporting some kind of anti-science views. If you cannot support
these statements than I would suggest you all cease in making the
accusations!

Best,

Tammy

I suggest that if you want people to be persuaded by your arguments you
express them more temperately.
