Health warning.
These numbers may not be an accurate reflection of true origins.
The software beneath PSCI-COM, and a list or two that I manage, reports too
many addresses as United States.
AOL.COM, for example, has folks everywhere.
It even accuses Peter Green, and the whole of AlphaGalileo, of running on
the back of an American system. Anything .com is also similarly libelled.

Subject: [PSCI-COM] Psci-com subscriber statistics (was RE: [PSCI-COM] new
low volume Oxfordshire mail list for people interested in pub lic engagement
- instructions for enrolling)
Hi all
Sorry for the delay in responding to Nathalie's enquiry about data on
psci-com subscribers - we are in the middle of managing the move of the
Wellcome Library (and all its new services) back to its refurbished
premises (opening Monday 16th - a little plug).
A limited amount of country data is available. See below. However, the
figures are a little distorted as listserv will class all .com, .net,
.org etc. addresses as being from the US which may not be accurate.
Some interesting countries represented!

I hope you guys in the UK will manage to set up the most useful local
and general networking tools for communicating... and I hope you all
realise how lucky you are already to have Psci-Com !
I lived in the UK for 10 years, during which I got involved in science
communication... I have now been living in France for 4 and a half
years, working for a Science Centre called Cap Sciences in Bordeaux. I
still read a lot of the Psci-Com posting and feel pretty jealous of the
whole "community spirit" there is in the UK... I have mentionned many
times around me the case of Psci-Com, but... People may be too
individualistic here...? I am French, so I am one of THEM, but I did
appreciate the way things work in the UK.
Do we have data / statistics on Psci-Com subscribers...? The percentage
of people living outside the UK ?
Best of luck to all and let us know the choices you make for developping
networking tools...

STEMPRA have got social networking and training events for PESTers
covered
within the M25 but are now considering whether regional branches are a
good
idea- starting possibly with Yorkshire-but we don't want to reinvent the
wheel if someone else is already filling this niche

Sounds like there is a need for someone to set up a regional hierarchy
within an existing outfit.
I wouldn't want to do anything that would take away from PSCI but email
lists on their own are soooo yesterday.
You can create them, with various degrees of openness on most of the
major
platforms: Google, Yahoo! Etc.
One thing you folks might like to consider is some sort of "social
network".
You can create closed lists on blogger. You can also build networks on
things like Searchles.
www.searchles.com
Did I ever mention the idea of a PEST group here? It would be somewhere
to
provide links to interesting stuff you find. With tags, it would then
become
an increasingly valuable resource.
